A lost statue, a remarkable search and the music of Chopin: join an evening celebrating a little-known chapter of London’s Polish heritage.
On Wednesday 28 October 2026, Rescuing Chopin in London – A Story That Found Its Way Home comes to the National Liberal Club. Live piano, theatrical storytelling and song will bring the story of London’s recovered Chopin monument to an audience beside the Thames.
The story behind the music
Presented to Britain by Poland in 1975, the bronze monument to Frédéric Chopin disappeared from public view during redevelopment on the South Bank. Years later, it was discovered in storage beneath Waterloo Bridge. Dr Marek Stella-Sawicki’s persistent efforts helped secure its recovery, restoration in Poland and return to the Southbank Centre in 2011.

An evening of piano, theatre and song
Pianist Artur Haftman will perform alongside theatrical narration and a vocal contribution from Maja Walentynowicz, a finalist of The Voice of Poland. The programme draws on a script by Dr Marek Stella-Sawicki, whose connection to the monument gives the evening its personal heart.
